The best coastal experiences in and around Cervantes

If you’re heading to Cervantes and want to make the most of the Turquoise Coast, we’ve rounded up some unforgettable coastal activities to add to your itinerary.

Known for its pristine white sand beaches, turquoise waters, and the reef system running just offshore, Cervantes is a haven for swimming, snorkelling, fishing, and spotting marine life.

The town itself was first established in 1962 to support the local cray fishing industry, and ever since, Cervantes has grown into a popular destination for its coastal adventures and laid-back charm. Just 27 kilometres north of Cervantes, you’ll find Jurien Bay, another lively seaside town offering more activities and attractions to enjoy during your stay.

Sea Lion Tours

Meet the ‘puppies of the sea’ on a local sea lion tour. Boats depart from Cervantes and Jurien Bay, taking you out to the islands to see Australian Sea Lion colonies. Watch them from the boat as they playfully swim and put on a show for their guests, or jump in for a snorkel to experience these curious creatures up close. This is one of the most unforgettable experiences along the Turquoise Coast, something you will be recommending to friends for years to come.

Snorkelling

When packing for a trip to Cervantes, make sure a snorkel and flippers are at the top of your list. The long limestone reef system running along Cervantes’ coastline creates plenty of sheltered snorkelling spots where you can explore colourful marine life just metres from shore. Hangover Bay, located just south of RAC Cervantes Holiday Park, is one of the most popular beaches for snorkelling. With calm, clear waters and soft white sand, you’ll want to spend all day in the water. For another great spot, head north to Sandy Cape. A small, sheltered bay, perfect for exploring the coral gardens and schools of fish.

Fishing

Cervantes is home to some of Western Australia’s best fishing spots. Cast a line from the shore and you could reel in whiting, silver trevally, squid, or even a large mulloway. Popular spots include Hangover Bay, Kangaroo Point and Cervantes Jetty, offering easy access for shore fishing.

For boat anglers, a public beach ramp is located at the end of Biscay Street in Cervantes, or you can launch from the concrete ramps at Jurien Bay Marina. Before taking out the fishing line, ensure you are in the correct zone. If you’d prefer to fish under expert guidance, local charters run from Jurien Bay offering full-day fishing tours, with rods, reels, and bait supplied.

Lobster Tours

Want to see how Cervantes’ most famous catch goes from the ocean to your plate? The Lobster Shack offers immersive tours where you can watch cray pots being pulled in before enjoying a freshly cooked Western Rock Lobster for lunch. After your catching tour, stay and explore the Lobster Shack factory to learn more about the cray fishing industry that put Cervantes on the map.

The Pinnacles

No trip to Cervantes is complete without visiting the Pinnacles Desert, located just 15 minutes south of RAC Cervantes Holiday Park. These striking limestone formations are one of Western Australia’s most unique and iconic landscapes. Drive through the trail loop or venture through the desert on foot to see these formations up close. Sunrise and sunset are a particularly magical times to visit, with the Pinnacles being one of the best star gazing spots in the town.

Wedge Island

Just 45 kilometres south of Cervantes, Wedge Island is the perfect day trip. Known for its quiet beaches and turquoise waters, it’s a great spot for snorkelling, swimming, surfing, or simply relaxing. If you’re travelling with a 4WD, you can drive directly onto the beach; otherwise, park at the access point and take the trail down to the beach. We suggest packing the car with all your beach equipment and lunch for a beach day.
