Expansion FAQ’s
What is the park expansion project?
Following on from the existing RAC Esperance Holiday Park’s redevelopment successfully completed in 2021, the Park is undergoing a $9.5m expansion to now also include the adjacent Lot 1B Goldfields Road, Castletown. The new development will deliver increased guest amenity through BBQ and open areas, increased ablution facilities, laundry, and parking, along with a range of additional accommodation options consisting of the following:
5 x large, powered caravan sites (with concrete van pads)
9 x standard powered caravan sites
Refurbished Blue Waters Lodge, 4 bedroom, 4.5 bathroom house
10 x 1 bed/1 bath studio units
1 x 1 bed/1 bath accessible cabin
7 x 2 bed/1 bath cabins
3 x 3 bed/2 bath cabins
As part of the expansion works, minor parking and road upgrades will also be completed within the existing park to support a safer and more efficient use of the park by all road users.
How long will the work be going on for?
Works commenced in August 2023. Noting the risk of potential impact on our guests, no works were undertaken during the peak period from early December 2023 through to April 2024. With the first works on site restarting mid-April 2024, the remaining works are expected to be completed over the next 5 – 7 months. Watch this space for progress updates and the release of bookings.
Will there be an impact to existing landscapes?
The expansion will see the carefully considered landscaping in the existing park extend into the new area, with landscaping works to be undertaken during the second half of 2024.
For the safety of our guests and staff, the expansion works involve removing a single Norfolk Pine tree, located towards the rear of the existing park, with works scheduled for early May 2024. This Norfolk Pine is not heritage listed (as opposed to the Pines along the beautiful Esperance foreshore) and all recommendations and relevant approvals have been sought and obtained to ensure its safe removal.
Can I book the new accommodation now?
Some of the new inventory is now available to book online via our website, with stays available from December 1 2024.
Will my existing booking be affected by the work?
No, adequate provisions have been made to avoid any impact to existing bookings. Any potential impact on your experience during your stay will be communicated as early and as clearly as possible by Park Management to ensure you are aware of what is happening next door during your stay.
Will you retain some of the history of the site?
An exciting part of the redevelopment is the retention and refurbishment of part of the old Fresh Air League building.
Purpose-built in 1947 by prominent Australia architect Nancy Allen, it was the site of children’s holiday accommodation for the Eastern Goldfields Fresh Air League, an organisation dedicated to the health, welfare and enjoyment of children living in the Eastern Goldfields. When not being used by the Fresh Air League, it would house groups such as the Scouts and the National Fitness League and by 1955 was also accommodating Goldfields pensioners on their Esperance-bound holidays. In 1986 the site began use as a youth hostel, originally being named Blue Waters YHA before becoming Esperance YHA. The site has continued to service the Goldfields community years on, most recently being used as emergency accommodation for stranded tourists during the COVID-19 pandemic.
As a part of RAC’s expansion, we are taking great care and investment in preserving the rich heritage of this iconic Esperance facility. Our developments will pair historical restoration with modern upgrades and amenities to produce a memorable accommodation offering in the next chapter of it’s lifetime with RAC Esperance Holiday Park.
