1. Go for a beach swim and doggy paddle at Golf Club Beach

Head north of Exmouth’s Town Beach (left of Warne Street) to find a long stretch of beach designated for dogs off-leash, making it 100 per cent pet-friendly. Exmouth dog owners opt to go here for seaside walks and ocean swims, as there’s plenty of sand and water for everyone. Do keep an eye out for four-wheel drives, which are also given access to this part of the coast.

2. Order a bucket of prawns at The Beach Shack, then watch whales play in the bay

Overlooking Bundegi Beach, The Beach Shack offers prime views of the sea and its many inhabitants. A popular place to kick back and relax, bucket of prawns on the table and best bud by your feet, you’ll find the shack on the shores of Bundegi Beach, just north of Exmouth town. At night, sit outside next to the bonfire and embrace the shack’s good vibes and great atmosphere.

3. Catch fish from the Learmonth Jetty

A little way out of town, the Learmonth Jetty is great a spot to settle in for a morning or afternoon of land-based fishing. Over the watchful eye of your furry best mate, catch anything from squid and queenfish to whiting, bream and trevally. While you’re fishing keep an eye on the water; it’s not unusual to see manta rays, dugongs, sharks, dolphins and whales playing in the clear waters not far from the jetty.

4. Try your luck fishing at Wapet Creek

If you travel along the beach south of Learmonth Jetty, you’ll eventually arrive at Wapet Creek. Located along the Exmouth Gulf, this popular four-wheel-drive-accessible fishing hotspot has been luring fishermen and their friends to its banks for years. Try your hand at catching fish like Mangrove Jack and Flatheads from this picturesque coastal creek. (The area is renowned for stonefish, so keep a watchful eye out if you decide to wade in the water.)

5. Feast on picture-perfect eats at The Social Society

Frequented by locals (even the long-necked, wingless bird kind), The Social Society is a café and fashion and wellness treasure trove. On the menu you’ll find beautiful vegetarian dishes and colourful drinks; in the store, locally designed and produced clothes and accessories, as well as a whole host of sustainable, reusable products. Hang outside with your fur baby and devour some healthy and environmentally conscious eats, while they chew on one of The Social Society’s dog treats.

6. Take a photo of you and your pooch at Exmouth’s Big Prawn

Australia’s home to plenty of “big” things: the Big Banana, the Big Pineapple, the Big Lobster and, in Exmouth, the Big Prawn. Four metres of big, this larger-than-life fibreglass crustacean was originally the mascot for the now disused MG Kailis’ seafood facility located 40 kilometres out of town. Donated by the company to the Shire of Exmouth, it now stands next to the visitors’ centre (as long as there isn’t a cyclone due to pass by the town). A short walk from the RAC Exmouth Cape Holiday Park, this is one giant attraction worthy of a cheesy photo or two.

7. Enjoy a local craft brew at Whalebone Brewing Company

Rover will feel right at home in this predominately outdoor venue, Whalebone Brewing Company is a mere 900 metres from RAC Exmouth Cape Holiday Park. Pet-friendly, Exmouth’s favourite brewery serves up scrumptious pizzas and locally brewed craft beer that perfectly wets the whistle. An easy choice for late afternoon drinks or pizza dinner, the brewery features a rustic shed housing beer on tap and a large outdoor beer garden that plays host to live music. You can catch up with human and canine friends at Whalebone every Thursday through to Sunday.

8. Teach your pup how to kayak

Brought your kayak or stand-up paddle board? With dogs being allowed at a number of beaches along the Exmouth Gulf, as well as ample space to launch your favourite watercraft, it’s easy to try kayaking or paddle boarding with your dog. Mcleod’s Beach, south of the Exmouth Marina, is a great place to start.

9. Burn some calories while making new furry friends at Exmouth Dog Agility Group

Want a new challenge for you and your pooch? If you’re planning on staying a while in Exmouth, look into joining the Exmouth Dog Agility Group. Members meet every Thursday evening at the Dog Agility Group facilities, where they learn to tackle a number of doggy obstacles (think seesaws, hoops and large a-frames). Designed to physically and mentally stimulate both human and fur baby, the training sessions are a great way to get some exercise, spend some quality time with your puppy, and make plenty of new friends.

10. Learn about Exmouth’s strong military history at the Krait and Potshot memorials

Did you know Exmouth has a rich military history dating back to the Second World War? Learn about Operation Potshot – the establishment of a US submarine refuelling base in 1942 – at the Potshot memorial, then discover what happened when a small group of SAS soldiers used a fishing vessel to conduct a sneak attack on Japanese warships in Singapore Harbour at the Krait memorial.
